Inspiron 1000 AC Adapter

so that i can still use it on ac power while charging the battery just until i can put it in the shop to get it repaired.

NOW that's a toughie! When the DC power jack has a bad connection, the best way is to fix it, not rig it. If you had a separate battery charger you could put one battery in, while another one is charging?...........

I own a Dell Inspiron 1000 running Windows XP. I bought a 3rd party AC adapter on eBay because the one I had was in bad condition. When the new AC adapter is plugged in, sometimes the mouse doesn't respond. Is there a way around this?

Maybe your Dell laptop knows its a 3rd party adapter and just wants to cause you a problem. Other then that there is no logical explanation to your issue.

My laptop is not responding to battery or AC power. The green light on the AC adapter is on, so we know power is reaching the adapter. I've had the laptop for about a year and a half. Lately it's been overheating easily and shutting down, but now I can't get it to start up again.
If anyone has information on how to troubleshoot this, thank you in advance. My warranty on the computer has expired.
I am also looking for a schematic of the Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop, if anyone could give me a link.

Likely, you have a problem with the connection for the A/C adapter. Since the A/C was not reaching the unit, the battery was never getting charged either. The battery is not a consideration until after you have corrected the A/C connection.

You may need to take it in for service. Before you do so, you could open the unit and visually check the connections. If the connection is solidly connected, then you will need to take it in for repair. If it is a loose connection, you could try to repair it yourself if you are confident in your equipment and skills, but soldering in a laptop is not a repair I suggest for the DIY projects.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1000 and I have had it for over a year now. It started having problems charging even when I made sure the adapter was plugged into the back of the computer and the outlet securely. I purchased a new AC adapter and it seems that the problem is even worse now. My battery is only good for about 15 minutes. Something else it has been doing - When I turn it on I have a screen that pops up and says to run the battery recalibration. I have done this a couple of times, but it still comes up everytime. Is there a problem with my battery or is the ac adapter plug-in? Or could it be something else. Thanks!

It's almost certainly the battery. Each time you recharge a laptop battery it loses a bit of capacity. Eventually it will need to be replaced. A year sounds a bit short but not impossible.

I have a dell inspiron 1000 that's hard drive crashed about a year-year and a half ago.... it always used to ask us to recalibrate the battery and would never keep charge for more than fifteen minutes and we didnt ever recalibrate the battery we just skipped that part. you could always still turn on the computer and use it but only on the boot and setup menu until finally i recalibrated the battery... i bought a new hard drive two days ago and was looking forward to using my laptop again but it wouldnt turn on. the light on the laptop wont come on but the ac adapter's green light will... i let it charge up but it wouldnt... i need to know if this is my battery or the AC adapter because my dad told me the laptop should turn on with no battery but plugged in to the adapter and it doesnt do that... is this because it is an older laptop and doesnt do that, is the laptop not gonna work if i get a new battery, whats wrong with it and how can i get it to turn on... get a new battery or what?

Sounds like the charging circuit in the laptop has failed. This might have been an ongoing problem. I suggest getting the battery checked out (Batteries Plus will do this for free). They usually stock laptop batteries so they could put a new one in and see if the charging circuit works. If that solves your problem, great if not it is time to have the notebook looked at by a qualified tech.
