Inspiron 1200 AC Adapter

I bought a $15 AC adapter from Laptops International and it crapped out on my within 2 weeks, it was also loose (I couldn't shake it or it would turn off [I don't have a battery for it]). Any help?

Laptop otherwise is ok, windows xp home installed, ac adapter new. otherwise works fine. When you plug the ac adapter into the laptop and wall then turn it on. ok. if you turn on the laptop and plug it in, it wont recognize the ac and runs off the battery. if the plug comes out and you replug it, same problem. Any ideas?

sounds like the power settings are off,go to control panel click power options and there will be a box with power schemes in the drop down menu make sure portable laptop is the power scheme.

Ok I have a Dell inspiron 1200. It will not turn on. I doubt it's the ac adapter because when I plug it in the charging light pops up. When I press the power button, all the lights on the keyboard turn on and the power light does too. But then it last for 3 or 4 seconds and then it all turns off. And while that happens the caps lock light blinks. When this first started happening the Dell screen popped up for 6 seconds. You know the one with the blue Dell in big letters and black screen. I'm convinced it overheated and it happened to me before but I left it alone for a week and it became normal but now it won't. So I wanna know how to fix it and what I need to do. Sorry I'm a computer newb. Thanks people. Your all cool.

i think there is lot dust in the heat fan and hence it overheats quick.
if you open thecase from back and clean the fan with vaccum cleaner + brush it would solve.
(if you don't want to take chance then take it to mechanic ASAP because heating can permenently Damage your CPU.)

I have a few questions: are any HP power adapters compatible with Dell lap tops? If an adapter is a higher voltage than the one that came with the computer, does it hurt your lap top to use it? Are there any Dell adapters compatible with a Dell Inspiron 1200 other than the PA-16? I have a Dell Inspiron 1200 and I need a new adapter, but it says its supposed to be used with a PA-16. I can't find a Dell PA-16 on Amazon (it's forty dollars on Dell's website--I'm not paying that much unless it's a last resort), I can only find an HP, and plus, I want something more durable. I've only had this one for a year and a half and the copper is already frayed. I don't want to spend twenty-five bucks a year on new chargers.

Take the power supply to a local repair shop. Depending on the type of connector and where the damage is they may be able to repair it quite cheaply. Any power cord will suffer wear and tear, it's a pain but you need to be extremely careful with the cables.
