Should the AC Adapter for my Inspiron B130 be making a high-pitched whistling noise?

It only makes that noise when it's plugged in, and you can't hear it from more than two feet away, so I figure it's normal. Electrons running through the adapter and all that. Is it normal? If any KNOWS, your answer would be appreciated.

-God Bless

No noises should emanate from your AC adapter. Electrons are supposed to be effectively contained within the unit, noises included.

Contact Dell for a replacement cord; they will probably want the defective piece shipped in the return container so they can figure out the problem.

Problem with Dell Inspiron B130 Power Cord (AC Adapter) or Motherboard?

I got a Dell Insipiron B130 in 2006. After the year warranty was up I got the 3 year extended warranty, which turned out to be a good thing because shortly after that I started having power charging issues. The computer would switch from battery to AC even when the cord was plugged in. The computer would hiss/buzz make some kind of noise when it switched to battery and the cord was plugged in. If I move the cord around that helps to keep it on AC power, but it is finickey, the slightest movement can send it to battery power. The power cord was working properly as it had it's green light on the strip. I explained these problems to the representative and they sent someone out to exchange the power cord. Getting a new power cord solved the problem, for a few months.

After a few months the problem started occuring again in the same way. So I phoned dell again and this time they sent someone out to replace the motherboard. That fixed the issue, for a while.

Now it's been about 11 months with this new motherboard and the problem is occuring again. I've contacted dell and they sent me a new AC cord and that did not solve the problem this time, both cords worked the same. I contacted them again and they've told me that they cannot replace the motherboard again because it's a general wear and tear issue and not a faulty part issue.

Any suggestions on how to handle this? The computer itself was only $500 so I don't want to buy a $200 motherboard if I can just upgrade to a new computer.

-How can I convince Dell to fix the problem?
-Is this a problem that is happening for others also?
-Could it be any other problem other than the motherboard or AC cable?

The problem is the DC Power Jack. This is the port on your laptop, that the AC adapter plugs into.

Granted, a laptop user can abuse this connection, by repeatedly bumping it, yanking the AC adapter cord out of the DC Power Jack, or general abusive use.

However, by their willingness to change the motherboard out, as they have already done, this tells me it's a faulty design.

Usually they drag their collective feet, and a motherboard replacement is the last thing they want to do. (Hence the feet dragging thing now)
(I'm not just referring to Dell, I'm referring to ALL laptop manufacturers)

A DC Power Jack is about the length of your fingernail, and a half fingernail tall. It isn't very much wider, than the outside shield of the AC adapter plug.

Off the bottom of this jack, there are either three, or four pins. These pins are about the size a flat toothpick, and they are usually this long,
-> --- (1/8th of an inch, or so)

The pins go down in mounting holes with solder around them. The lead's (Pin's) are inserted through the motherboard mounting hole, and solder is applied around them. The solder joint should look like a small anthill.
(Yes, I'm holding one in my hand, and yes I'm a computer repair tech)

If the DC Power Jack has three leads on the bottom, two are for the DC electricity, (Positive and Negative), and one is to help stabilize the jack on the motherboard. If it's a four lead design, the two extra leads help stabilize the jack.

That's all that holds that DC Power Jack to the motherboard!

Point I'm going to make, is that there have been a rash of bad motherboard designs in this area. Bad design where the DC power jack mounts. A LOT of these bad designs, results in the motherboard breaks at this point! Not the DC power jack has broken, or a solder joint has come loose. (The last two were the most common. But not in the last few years)

This means no matter how many times they replace the motherboard, or how delicate you may be with your laptop, eventually the motherboard will break in this area again.

Plus, not trying to kick a guy when they're down, but Dell has had a rash of bad financial problems, and have laid off a slew of workers. Add to this that the US is having bad economic times, and you have somebody trying to cut costs at every corner.

Guess where that puts you?

Give them one more try, tell that you don't feel you're getting satisfaction out of this laptop, it has a bad motherboard design for the DC Power Jack, and you wish another laptop model for a replacement.
You don't want to contact the State Attorney Generals Office, (Of your state), but will if forced to.

If you're getting close to the end of the warranty, perhaps you'd better contact the State Attorney Generals Office, of your state, Consumer Division, and file a complaint. They will send you a complaint form you have to fill out, and return.

Be aware that this is taking a strong measure! The State Attorney Generals Office/Consumer Division is on your side, but they are not to be played with. They will levy heavy fines against Dell, and light a fire under them!

Need advice on a new 60 W AC Power Adapter and a new Battery for Dell Inspiron B130 Laptop?

I am in the market for a 60 W AC Power adapter for a Dell Inspiron B130 Laptop. The labtop is over two and a half years old, so it is not under warranty. I found one on line for fifteen dollars V. Dell's for sixty five dollars? Anything, I should beware of with the cheaper product. Also, the Inspiron B130 Labtop needs a new rechargeable Li-Ion Battery(Type KD186 Rating 11.1V, Capicity 56WH). This will be the third battery for a computer that is very rarely not plugged into a wall outlet. From what I have read, this Dell model has had many battery problems.(Stay away from this model if you do not plan on using a power cord at all times.) Does anyone know of any low cost alternatives. Hate to spend anymore than I have to on a laptop this old. Can the batteries be fixed or refurbished? Or are they any lower cost knock-offs? Can't imagine an off brand battery could not be any worse than the ones from Dell.

I have been in Your Shoes and below are some of my Lessons Learned experience regarding buying a replacement Notebook PC battery. My 1st Notebook PC (Gateway Pentium IV) which I had rarely used on battery power later went dead and was NOT ABLE to hold a charge. For some unexplained reason, my wife's Dell Latitude D600 during the same time never had a battery problem, I don't know why?

Anyway I first bought a so-called compatible/generic notebook battery (actually sold at TIGER DIRECT and manufactured in China) and I would strongly suggest you ONLY purchase an authentic genuine Dell Notebook PC battery with the Dell logo or P/N. If what you said is true about others having bad experience's with Dell genuine batteries (yes, I have seen the complaints even at the Dell website myself since we currently own 3 Dell Notebook PCs: older Latitude D800 w/2 batteries, Inspiron E1505/6400 w/2 batteries 9 cell original & 2nd 6 cell used I bought on EBAY several months ago, and my wife owns Latitude D620 and has never experienced battery failure in 4 whole years). Back to buying generic batteries esp on-line, what happened to me was sure the generic battery fit the compartment with no problems but it would NOT charge and sat at zero % as I recorded the change in Control Panel Power whereas the used Dell 6 cell did slowly begin charging up to 100% <= in fact I used it and save my original 9 cell occasionally testing how many lights it shows.

If you buy on-line, always ask for guaranteed compatibility and their return/refund procedures IN ADVANCE like I did, so I immediately contacted the Seller and provided SCREENSHOTS of no (zero% charging), had to pay the return postage to recover most of my costs, then ended up buying an original genuine battery and it worked!

If say I really thought I might want to buy a generic battery, then I would only buy from a brick & mortar computer store like MICRO CENTER and ask Customer Service before paying about guaranteed compatibility or refund before paying, and certainly if it doesn't work, then don't wait & bring it back immediately or take your B130 in the car and test it right in the store with their permission. You could also shop & call local computer repair stores, and ask how much for any compatible battery, and bring your B130 there and test before buying...if so, ask for like maximum store warranty and don't buy unless they at least give you 90-120 days in writing on your sales receipt.

The real compatibility tests is reflected in the CONTROL PANEL under POWER OPTIONS, then cIick on POWER METER and you will see a battery with the charging percentage %. If the battery is dead or incompatible then this power meter will sadly reflect zero (0%).

By the way, after I paid and got my new genuine Notebook Battery, then I kept the original dead battery on the PC battery compartment to prevent dust etc and kept the brand new one outside occasionally testing & re charging my brand new one.

FYI now I only own 3 Dell Notebook PCs, Latitude D800 which came with 2 nine cell batterries, but my 2 newest Latitude D620 and Inspiron E1505/6400 only have their one original -- and I don't remove it bec it's not worth the possibility of dust or whatever getting into the system...and would only do so, if I had an old dead one or bought a 2nd new one, then I might establish a rotation plan.

Hope the Above Info Helps and Best of Luck!

Is using the wrong AC power adapter going to damage my laptop?

My Dell Inspiron B130's 60 Watt AC power adapter snapped in half today. A friend of mine happened to have a 90 Watt power adapter for a Compaq laptop on hand, so I figured what the heck; I plugged it in, and it is powering my computer just fine. I have bought a new Dell adapter, and it is in the mail, but I still want to use my computer until it gets here. Are there any negative side effects I should be worried about?

I also have an Inspiron B130 and am using a 90 Watt AC adapter. I have been doing so for two years and my computer seems to be working better.

where can i buy this type of ac adapter for my notebook?

i need a 60-Watt 3 Prong AC Adapter for Dell Inspiron 1200/ 1300/ 2200/ B120/ B130 Notebooks. i live in north plainfield, nj and i dont know where to go to get this for my computer and i really need it cuz my comp keeps shutting off cuz da adapter is not working properly....

Hi there.

All you have to do is contact Dell and tell them your type of PC so they know which adapter to send you.
